What are benzocaine skin cream, ointment, or aerosol? (Back to top) BENZOCAINE (Americaine®, Lagol®, Hurricane®) causes loss of feeling in the skin and mucous membranes, relieving pain from insect bites, minor burns, small wounds, or dermatitis. Generic benzocaine skin products are available. What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top) They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •mouth sores or infection •skin infection •an unusual or allergic reaction to benzocaine, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I use this medicine? (Back to top) Benzocaine is applied to the affected area of the skin three or four times a day as needed. Shake the aerosol can well before using. The solution can be applied with a cotton swab. Follow the directions carefully. Do not apply more, or more often than recommended. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. What if I miss a dose? (Back to top) If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses. What drug(s) may interact with benzocaine skin products? (Back to top) •sulfa drugs Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines. What side effects may I notice from using benzocaine skin products? (Back to top) Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: •itching, redness, swelling, pain, and rash Very rare with benzocaine skin products: •difficulty breathing •dizziness or drowsiness •fast or slow heartbeat •headache •increased sweating •restlessness, nervousness, anxiety •seizures (convulsions) •swelling of the face •tremor What should I watch for while taking benzocaine skin products? (Back to top) Benzocaine skin products are not for long-term use. Do not use for more than one week without checking with your prescriber or health care professional. Do not use on large areas of broken or damaged skin. Contact your prescriber or health care professional if your condition does not improve within a few days or if you notice redness, itching or swelling. Do not get benzocaine in your eyes; if you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water. If the benzocaine product you are using contains alcohol, keep away from lighted matches, cigarettes and other naked flames. Where can I keep my medicine?
